Short answer: Do not approve a container quantity from product photographs or a generic “pieces per 40HQ” claim. Ask for each SKU's final packed length, width, height, gross weight, carton count, nesting or knock-down method and stacking limit. Use those inputs to build a loading drawing that also accounts for door access, protection, weight distribution, securing and destination unloading sequence. Reconcile the plan with the final packing list before the doors are sealed.
Outdoor furniture is unusually sensitive to geometry. A stackable chair, assembled sofa, long table top, umbrella pole and cushion carton each uses space differently. Small changes made during sample approval—thicker cushions, a larger frame or stronger corner protection—can change the packing dimensions and therefore the achievable load.

Use measured production packaging where possible. A preliminary quote may use estimated CBM, but the shipment plan should be revised after the final sample, packaging trial or first packed production units.
Why summed CBM is only a first estimate
Carton cubic volume is length × width × height, using consistent units. Adding all cartons helps compare scenarios, but it does not prove that the shapes fit through the door or tessellate inside the selected container. Long components, irregular bundles, pallets, curved frames and “last-row” voids can leave unusable space.
Do not plan against nominal container volume alone. Obtain the carrier or equipment provider's actual container specification, maximum gross mass and payload for the unit being booked. The permitted cargo mass is also affected by tare mass and applicable transport limits. The loading party and qualified logistics providers must confirm compliance; this guide does not replace their calculations.
Build a mixed-SKU loading sequence
- Freeze the purchase-order quantities and packing revision.
- Group cartons by geometry, weight, fragility, destination zone and unloading priority.
- Place stable, load-bearing packages according to the professionally reviewed distribution plan; do not put heavy or hard edges onto crush-sensitive weaving or upholstery.
- Reserve protection between coated frames and at contact or movement points.
- Test door clearance and the feasibility of loading and unloading each layer.
- Show void-control and securing locations without using furniture surfaces as unapproved structural supports.
- Check that the last-loaded/first-unloaded sequence works for the receiving team.
- Reconcile drawing quantities with the commercial packing list and mark unresolved balance quantities.
A mixed container can help combine product categories, but it also increases coordination. MOQ decisions made in the MOQ plan must be tested against packing geometry rather than assuming every remaining cubic metre can accept another SKU.
Treat cargo protection and securing as safety work
The joint IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code is a non-mandatory global code of practice addressing the handling and packing of cargo transport units for sea and land transport. Its core packing guidance covers topics including load distribution and securing. Apply the relevant current contractual, carrier and legal requirements with competent logistics professionals.
Before loading, the responsible party should examine whether the container is suitable and dry/clean for the cargo, then document its condition. Loading and securing methods must match the cargo, route and unit—not a generic photograph from another shipment. Furniture protection must also consider moisture risk, ventilation assumptions, sharp edges, rubbing, glass or stone components and safe door opening at destination.
Request a loading evidence pack
- Final packing list with SKU, carton number, contents, packed dimensions, gross/net weight as required and total reconciliation.
- Approved loading drawing or layer plan and any professional securing instructions.
- Container identifier, seal identifier and booking/shipment reference.
- Dated photos of container condition before packing and staged goods with readable internal carton references where appropriate.
- Photos of intermediate layers before they are concealed, including protection and securing.
- Final door-area and seal photos, plus a written record of quantity or packing deviations.
- Document ownership: who prepared, checked and authorized the final loading and discrepancy release.
Agree the evidence before loading day. Retrospective photos cannot prove a concealed layer. Add the agreed checks to the pre-shipment inspection brief, while recognizing that inspection scope and loading supervision may be separate services.
